How to Set an Order Cutoff for a Home Bakery

Your order cutoff should give you enough time to buy ingredients, prepare dough or batter, decorate, package, and organize pickup without turning every week into a rush.

Work backward from pickup

Start with the pickup day and list the work that must happen before it. If customers pick up Saturday morning, you may need Friday for baking and packaging, Thursday for prep, and Wednesday night to finalize quantities.

Your order cutoff should happen before the first task that depends on knowing the final quantity.

Consider products with long preparation times

Sourdough, decorated cookies, layered cakes, macarons, and other products can require more lead time than simple drop cookies or brownies.

If your menu contains products with different preparation needs, set the cutoff based on the item that needs the earliest commitment.

Give yourself shopping time

If you buy ingredients specifically for orders, leave enough time to shop or receive supplies after the order window closes. Do not build your schedule around ingredients always being available at the last minute.

Make the deadline visible everywhere customers order

Put the deadline on the menu page and repeat it in social posts that promote the menu. If you accept orders through direct messages or text, send customers back to the current menu so they see the same cutoff.

Protect the deadline

Late orders can quickly erase the planning benefit of a cutoff. You can choose to accept exceptions, but make that a conscious decision rather than the default.

Keep the weekly workflow simple

If your products or menu change every week, the goal is to make updates predictable for you and easy to understand for customers. Wizehawk Weekly Menu Manager is built for micro bakeries, home bakers, meal-prep businesses, cottage food sellers, and other small food businesses that work this way.
